"She's just not keen on me and after 20 years I had enough of her rudeness and stopped contacting her. [My husband] is fine about it but won't take sides of course, and I don't bad mouth her to the [children] as that's not fair," she explains.

While it's hard to imagine the situation getting any worse, it has come courtesy of a 'cold war' move from the mother-in-law involving a family group chat and a shared smart phone.

The woman recently discovered her mother-in-law had set up a WhatsApp group for her family, adding her husband and children but not her.

"To my knowledge no one had an actual conversation on there," she writes. "My kids don't use WhatsApp at all really so weren't very engaged."
